Common varicose veins symptoms
In addition to their purplish or bluish color, varicose veins can cause symptoms like:
- Dry skin
- Change of skin color
- Restless legs
- Active bleeding
- Impaired mobility
- Stiffness when sitting or standing for a long period of time
If you have TWO OR MORE of these symptoms, you may have varicose vein disease of your lower extremities, and we may be able to assist you in improving your condition.
What are varicose veins?
Veins contain tiny valves that help keep the blood moving forward, toward the heart. When these little valves malfunction, blood can “pool up” behind them, weakening vessel walls and causing them to bulge and appear dark or purplish. Several factors can contribute to the development of varicose veins, including older age, being overweight or obese, pregnancy, or standing or sitting for long periods of time. Varicose veins are more likely to occur in women and in people with a family history of the condition.
How are varicose veins treated?
That depends on the size of the vein. Treatment options for veins causing no symptoms or mild symptoms can include elevating the legs when possible and wearing support hose to help maintain valve health and promote healthy circulation. Losing excess weight and avoiding long periods of standing or sitting can also help. For more severe veins, treatment options include:
- Sclerotherapy for small to medium size veins
- Endovenous laser treatment (EVLT)
- Phlebectomy (vessel removal) for smaller veins or vein stripping for larger or more severe varicose veins
How are spider veins treated?
In most cases, spider veins are treated using sclerotherapy, injections of special chemical solutions into the affected vessel which irritate the vessel lining, resulting in the vessels closing off the flow of blood.
Will varicose vein treatment interfere with circulation?
No, blood will naturally reroute to neighboring vessels. Varicose vein surgery can actually improve circulation by eliminating the portions of blood vessels that no longer function properly.
